SD lawmakers consider limits on payday lending

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota legislative panel is taking a first look at a measure that seeks to put restrictions on short-term loans.
• Rep. Steve Hickey of Sioux Falls says he negotiated provisions of the bill with representatives of the payday lending industry who became alarmed after he suggested putting limits on interest rates charged for the short-term loans.
• The bill would not limit interest rates, but instead would impose additional state regulations and limit the size of loans based on a borrower's ability to repay the debt.
• The House Commerce and Energy Committee planned to hold a hearing on the measure Wednesday.

Saturday opens Memorial Day camping reservations

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Reservations for campsites and cabins for Memorial Day weekend open this Saturday.
• The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department says that Saturday is the first day to make a reservation for a May 23 arrival. As a holiday weekend, reservations that include any of the dates of May 23-25 require at least a three-night stay.
• Reservations for campsites and cabins can be made as many as 90 days before arrival. Custer State Park accepts reservations beginning one year before arrival.
• Reservations can be made at www.CampSD.com or by calling 1-800-710-2267.
