SD college establishes trap shooting club

• YANKTON, S.D. (AP) -- Mount Marty College in Yankton has established the first collegiate trap shooting club in South Dakota.
• The school is gathering a 25-member team this month, Athletic Director Charles Iverson said. The co-ed team will practice and host local competitions at the Jim River Trap Range, with shooting to begin in March.
• "Our ultimate goal is to get our shooters prepared and qualified for a national competition by this time next year," Iverson said.
• The school said it expects students to show great interest in the club because hunting is one of South Dakota's largest industries.
• "The addition of this sport really made sense to us," Iverson said. "With hunting and outdoor recreation being so popular in the region, we knew there would be interest on the part of the students. "
• The school is using a grant from the National Shooting Sports Foundation Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative to set up the program. The team's coach will be Rick Kalsow, a trap shooting coach certified by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and a shotgun coach certified by the National Rifle Association.
• The college said the club will promote gun safety, and that a trap shooting course might be added to the curriculum.
