provisions in place. My argument against that was that after we complied with the federal mandate and accepted the "free money," all future claims due to the new language would fall on the backs of South Dakota's Main Street businesses. Moreover, I stated that we have provided sufficient time to evaluate the expanded program, and there appears to be less-than-compelling evidence to keep the provisions on the books. I quipped that it has been said "we will never know anything here on earth so close to eternal life as a government program." If we do not repeal this law now, then when will we? We played by the federal government's rules and took in the money they dangled before us. Now it is time to close that door, and remove the additional provisions which will only cost South Dakota businesses with no federal participation going forward. The bill passed out of committee 10-3. It will be heard
