Today in Weather History

1959: A man from Gary in Deuel County was in critical condition with frozen hands, feet, and arms after spending the night in his car in subzero weather.

1987: Record warmth occurred across all of central, north central, and northeast South Dakota as well as west central Minnesota with highs in the mid 50s to the lower 60s. Aberdeen, Kennebec, Mobridge, Pierre, Sisseton, Timber Lake, Watertown, and Wheaton all set record highs on this date in the 1987. Pierre recorded the warmest temperature for the day with 62 degrees.

1933: Oimekon, Russia attained the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere: -90F.

1958: Seven members of the Manchester United soccer team were killed in Munich after their airplane crashed while trying to take off in icy conditions. The plane smashed into buildings at the end of the runway.

1978: A rapidly intensifying low pressure stalled off the southern New England coast for more than 24 hours. Blizzard conditions and coastal flooding were the big stories as hurricane force winds drove rough seas ashore. Snowfall amounts of 30 to 38 inches fell in and around the Boston area. 92mph winds raked Cape Cod.

2010: A major blizzard struck the eastern United States. Two to three feet of snow piled up across much of Maryland and eastern West Virginia, with about a foot and a half at Washington, DC. The region would be struck by another blizzard just four days later.
