Groton MathCounts takes fourth in chapter competition

• The 2014 Northeastern South Dakota Chapter MathCounts Competition was held at the Crothers Engineering Building on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings on Saturday, February 1.  Groton team members, Marshall Lane, Micah Poor, Madison Sippel, and AnneMarie Smith, earned the fourth place trophy and plaque.  Groton students, Jenifer Fjelstad and Madilyn Wright, also participated in the event.
• Other schools receiving awards were:  Brookings (first place), Roncalli (second place), Milbank (third place), Simmons (fifth place), and Holgate (sixth place).  The top two teams and the top two individuals now advance to the state competition in Pierre on March 7-8.  The top four individuals at the state competition will represent South Dakota at the national competition later this spring.  MathCounts is a nationwide coaching and competition program for middle school students that promotes excellence in mathematics achievement.
