SD lawmakers seek to ease student drug suspensions

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota lawmakers are considering reducing the amount of time some students caught with drugs are kicked out of sports and other school activities.
• Current law requires that students caught with drugs a first time are suspended from school activities for one year, but the suspension can be cut to 60 school days if they get counseling or treatment. Repeat offenders lose eligibility permanently.
• The Senate Education Committee is holding a hearing Tuesday on a bill that would cut the suspension for a first offense to 30 days if a student gets counseling. Some might have to get more treatment before returning to activities.
• Students caught a second time would be kicked out of activities for one year, but that could be cut to 60 days if they get treatment.
