Five grapplers place in Groton Lions Tourney

• Four Groton grapplers took first place one took second at the Groton Lions Wrestling Tournament held Saturday at the Arena in Groton.
• Taking first were Trevor Pray at 106 pounds, Kelby Hawkins at 120, Jeric Albrecht at 138 and Parker Kroll at 152. Brandyn Anderson took second at 195 pounds.
• Hawkins beat out a tight race for the Glenn Sperry Pinner's Award. He had four pins in 4:31. Also in the running were Nathan Jones, Britton-Hecla, with four pins in 5:13 and Austin Waite, Canton, with four pins in 6:35.
• Canton won the team title with 155.50 points followed by Watertown JV with 150.5, Groton Area had 117, Britton-Hecla/Langford had 114.50, Milbank 99, Huron JV 90, Warner-Northwestern 60, Sioux Falls O'Gorman JV 56, Webster Area 44, Tiospa Zina 39, and Redfield-Doland 37.
• There were 126 wrestlers at the tourney and the tournament was concluded in just under eight hours. Tom Woods was the announcer. Patti Woods did the charts (she said she put on over four miles during the day!) Scott Thorson made sure the wrestlers got to their proper places and he ran the seed meeting. Groton Senior Snow Queen Darac Harry and Groton Junior Snow Queen Heather Lone presented the medals.

Kelby Hawkins, 120, placed first and he pinned all of his opponents and won the Glenn Sperry Pinner's Award. He pinned Shawn Stemsrud, Milbank, 0:38; Jon Binstock, SF O'Gorman JV, 1:12; Blut Htoo, Huron JV, 0:42; and in the championship match pictured here, Brandon Vasquez, Watertown JV, 1:59.

Trevor Pray, 106, placed first with a 7-0 decision over Hunter Burnett, Milbank. In the first round, he pinned TJ Kissner, Huron JV, 1:15; and then he decision Scott Peterson, Canton, 7-2. Pray is now 11-6 on the season.
