Welke's Letter to the Editor

• HCR 1002 was a simple resolution to recognize that we have a teacher shortage and it is going to get worse. This resolution was a bipartisan document to make a statement and to show that we appreciate what our teachers do and that we recognize the important role that they play in the lives of our children and the future of this state.  Schools all around the state told us of the problems they are having in finding and retaining teachers.  Some leave the field to enter into private business or they go to another state. There are fewer students entering into the field of teacher preparation.  Large numbers of teachers are entering retirement age.  Have we reached a crisis situation?  I think so.  We have great teachers but will we be able to keep them?  Before any problem can be solved we must first recognize that there is a problem and then we need to put together a plan.  Unfortunately many of my fellow legislators would rather not admit that there is a problem.  It is time that we got something done for the students, teachers, and schools of SD.  Funding SD schools at a level that is below what we were doing five years ago is not enough.  Please let your legislators know that you support our schools and urge them to adequately fund them.
