City has water main break

• When the main pump water meters were read Monday morning, the readings were way off the normal rates. The equivalent of about three water towers (tower holds 85,000 gallons) worth of water had disappeared overnight. The search began for the leak.
• The lift stations are also checked each morning and it was discovered that the lift station on Aspen Avenue and the one southwest of Groton had extra hours. In fact, the high flow alert was sounded on the Aspen Lift station.  That gave a clue of where to begin the search. After opening up several man holes and looking at the flow of the water, the man hole at Washington Street and Third Avenue West revealed the leak. Water was pouring into the man hole through the rings just under the surface of the road. The block of water main was isolated and it left the Village Apartments and five other homes without water for the day.
• Todd Lerew of Dahme Construction brought down an excavator to dig through the three to five feet of frost in the ground. They spent the day looking and digging, but the frost hook broke towards the end of the day and work had to be halted. They will continue digging today to try and find the source of the leak, was has evaded the city workers.
