low pressure system passed through Groton on its trek to the southeast. Once it passed through, the wind picked up and the one inch of snow that fell during the morning hours was lifted in the air. By 12:50 p.m., the Silver Skates committee decided to call off the 2 p.m. performance as well, after earlier canceling the evening performance. Visibility was reduced to zero and the temperature started to drop, resulting in subzero wind chill factors.
• The Carnival of Silver Skates will be held on Sunday, Feb. 2, with a single 1 p.m. performance. Practices will be held again on Saturday at the usual time.
• The blizzard warning was activated at 6 a.m., but it did not really hit until closer to noon. Weather forecasters did say that the there would be a delay in the blizzard.
• By mid afternoon on Sunday, I-29 was closed from Brookings to the Canadian border.
• Northwestern Energy reported that eight power poles were blown down in the Faulkton area and the town of Faulkton was without power for a short period of town. Also, Huron and Avon reported power outages from the blizzard.
