Today in Weather History

1979: A strong area of low pressure moving across the region brought widespread heavy snow of 5 to 10 inches to much of Minnesota from the 18th through the 20th. Travel was difficult if not impossible in many areas where there was near blizzard conditions. Schools and businesses closed along with many flights cancelled.

1999: One to 4 inches of snowfall combined with winds of 30 to 45 miles an hour brought blizzard conditions to part of northeast South Dakota. Highway 12 and Interstate 29 were most affected by the low visibilities. There was a seven car pileup on Highway 12 near Andover with minor injuries. As a result, traffic was shut off in the westbound lanes for a few hours. Over 200 people were stranded overnight at a restaurant near Summit. There was also a rollover north of Summit which resulted in minor injuries. One traveler said the visibility was frequently near zero.

2010: Dense freezing fog created very low visibilities to 1/16 of a mile along with icy roads which contributed to a multi-vehicle wreck 11 miles south of Watertown. The accident killed three people and injured two others. Five vehicles, including a grain truck, were involved in the wreck about 930 am near the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and State Highway 22.

1973: A frail home was thrown 100 yards by the winds of an F2 tornado in Corey, LA. A young mother was killed, but her baby was carried 400 yards and received only minor injuries.

1978: The Hartford Coliseum in Connecticut was empty when its roof collapsed under the weight of heavy snow and ice just hours after a basketball game had finished.

1999: An F4 tornado with a 75 mile long path killed 25 people as it ripped across Mount Ayliff, South Africa. It is Africa's deadliest tornado.

2007: A particularly intense storm system, named Kyrill, swept from the British Isles into northern Europe. Winds gusted to 125 mph in Germany and 132 mph in the Czech Republic. Several tornadoes were spawned as well, including an F3 that struck Lauchhammer, Germany south of Berlin.
