• Next week's freeze could be accompanied by some snow, but it'd mainly be lake-effect snow in the Great Lakes areas as the colder air blows over the warmer water, McMahon said.
• "As far as exact amounts of snow it's a little too hard to say right now," McMahon said. "There are setups where we can pick up a couple of inches of snow per day if not more -- enough to provide problems with travel."
• He said winds weren't expected to be a serious factor, but at such low temperatures even a mild wind would bring wind chill.

Madison water declared safe to drink again

• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- It's OK to drink the water in Madison again.
• The city's 6,500 residents were told to stop using it late Wednesday when a concrete-and-dirt roof collapsed into an underground well that feeds the city's water towers, which contaminated the water.
• Schools canceled classes Thursday, and bottled water was trucked into town as crews worked to clean up the mess and restore water service.
• Residents were told late Thursday they could use the water for showering and doing laundry.
• Then on Friday the city said the water was tested at the Sioux Falls Health Lab and deemed safe for all purposes.

New commissioner named for SD softball association

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Gary Young of Watertown has been named the next commissioner of the South Dakota Amateur Softball Association.
• Young got started with ASA/USA Softball in 1974 as a men's fastpitch player, and started umpiring the following year. In 1979, he was appointed the Northeast South Dakota Area fastpitch commissioner. He became the umpire-in-chief for northeast south Dakota in 1980.
• He is succeeding Bill Maher, who is stepping down after nearly half a century at the helm of the state association, which oversees more than 2,000 teams.
