• 5. ELECTION-YEAR POLITICS
• The upcoming legislative session may feature more than the usual political posturing. Two state lawmakers are seeking the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, and a few are looking at running for other statewide offices. All 105 legislative seats are up for election this fall, and Daugaard is expected to seek a second term as governor.
• Sen. Larry Rhoden of Union Center and Rep. Stave Nelson of Fulton are running for the GOP Senate nomination against former Gov. Mike Rounds and two other candidates. And Sen. Shantel Krebs, R-Renner, has said she is seeking the Republican nomination to run for secretary of state.
• Lawmakers frequently use speeches in committees and floor debates to stake out their positions, but legislative leaders wonder whether some of those speeches may be even more political in this election year.

Court upholds RC surgeon's tax evasion conviction

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of a former Rapid City surgeon convicted of trying to cheat the government out of more than $1 million in taxes.
• Fifty-six-year-old Edward Picardi, of Sturgis, was accused of sending millions of dollars of income out of the country and filtering the money through offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes.
• A jury in 2012 convicted Picardi on 13 felony counts after a three-week trial and he was sentenced in May to five years in federal prison.
• His medical license was also revoked.
• The Internal Revenue Service filed a civil case against him for $3.7 million in back taxes and penalties.

Manning resident claims $673K Wild Card 2 price

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A North Dakotan from Manning has claimed a Wild Card 2 prize worth more than $673,000.
• The North Dakota Lottery says the winning ticket from the Dec. 18 drawing was sold at the Pit Stop in Dickinson.
• The winner took home the cash Monday in Bismarck but didn't want their named released.
