Dakotas in store for a winter warm-up

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Out with the Arctic, in with the Pacific.
• Just three days after the weather was so cold it prompted many schools in the Dakotas to call off classes, temperatures across the two states Thursday are expected to be in the teens, 20s, 30s, and even 40s.
• National Weather Service meteorologist Janine Vining says the Arctic blast that blew through the region early this week is history, and warmer Pacific air is causing a warm-up.
• High temps are expected to remain in the 20s, 30s and 40s through the weekend. That compares to the minus teens and 20s on Monday, and wind chills that day as low as the minus 50s.

SD seeks applications for after-school grants

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Education Department says applications are available for grants to support after-school programs that provide students with academic activities.
• The 21st Century Community Learning Center grants are awarded for five years in amounts of $50,000 to $150,000 a year. The grants are funded by the federal government and must go to programs offered outside of regular school hours.
• The programs are intended to help students from high-poverty areas and low-performing schools.
• Sue Burgard of the state Education Department says programs funded by the grants give students a safe, fun and educational place to go after school.
• Grant applications must be submitted to the department by Feb. 28.

State: $1.3M spent at SD farmers markets in 2013

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State officials say South Dakota's farmers markets are a small but growing part of the ag economy.
• The Agriculture Department says sales topped $1.3 million at the 60-plus markets in the state last year.
• The department worked with 12 of the operations to determine gross sales, pric
