• Bret Afdahl, director of the state Division of Banking, says people need to understand the repayment terms for the different kinds of loans that are available.
• Afdahl says short-term loans are different than installment loans that must be repaid over a specified period of months. Payday loans are short-term loans secured with a check, a financial account or a person's salary. Title loans are secured by an interest in a motor vehicle and are designed to be paid in a single installment.
• Afdahl says people can face additional charges if they cannot pay off those short-term loans in full at the due date.

SD man gets 14 years for distributing meth

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A man has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine in Sioux Falls.
• Twenty-four-year-old Jeremy Zurcher, of Irene, was indicted in July for conspiring to distribute more than 500 grams of meth in South Dakota's largest city. He pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced in late December.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Zurcher will be on supervised release for five years following his prison term.

Fierce winter storm arriving in northeast US just in time for first work day of 2014

• HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A winter storm was bearing down on the Northeast, promising heavy snows, strong winds and bitter temperatures that will make commutes hazardous for the first work day of the new year.
• Snow began falling overnight in parts of New England and New York but the real brunt of the storm wasn't expected to hit until later Thursday. As much as a foot of snow or more was forecast for some areas overnight Thursday into Friday, and temperatures were expected to plummet, with some areas seeing highs just above zero, the National Weather Service said.
• "There will be travel problems," said Hugh Johnson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Albany, N.Y. "It will be very cold."
• Up to 14 inches of snow is forecast for the Boston area and the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for Long Island -- where 8 to 10 inches of snow could fall and winds could gust up to 45 mph -- from Thursday evening into Friday
