SD wind chills dip to near 40 below in some parts

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The National Weather Service says wind chills in South Dakota are dipping to near 40 below.
• Readings hit 39 below in Huron and 33 below in Sioux Falls at 5 a.m. Monday.
• The northern part of the state has been under a wind chill warning, which will shift to an advisory later in the morning that will last through Tuesday morning.
• Nearly the entire state showed air temperature readings below zero, with a couple of locations reaching 23 below.
• The Weather Service says those temperatures, combined with winds forecast at 5 mph to 10 mph west of Interstate 29 and 10 mph to 20 mph east of the highway, are creating dangerous conditions.
• Meteorologists advise that people who have to venture outdoors wear appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves.


17-year-old boy from STAR Academy dies

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The state Department of Corrections says a 17-year old boy has died from an apparent medical condition at a state-run juvenile corrections program in Custer.
• Officials say Brady Folkens developed symptoms at the State Treatment and Rehabilitation Academy and was seen by on-site medical staff before being taken to the Custer Regional Hospital on Saturday. Brady was then flown to Sioux Falls so that he could be seen by a specialist but died Saturday night at a Sioux Falls hospital.
• The family was present at the hospital when Brady died.
• An autopsy will be conducted and test results are pending on the cause of his illness.
• The department has asked the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the death, which is standard procedure for all deaths in custody.
