Kelly leads Morehead St. past S. Dakota 120-83

• MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) -- Drew Kelly scored a career-high 40 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, and Kareem Storey tied a school record with 16 assists as Morehead State dominated South Dakota 120-83 Thursday night.
• Kelly, who had a combined 36 points in his last seven games, finished 14 of 23 from the field and 8 of 12 from 3-point range.
• Morehead State (8-5) ripped off an 11-1 run to start the game and never looked back. Kelly scored the team's last nine points of the half as his team opened up a 57-34 halftime lead.
• South Dakota (3-8) had no answer for the Eagles, who hit 17 3-pointers during the contest, one short of the school record.
• Morehead's Brent Arrington scored 19 while Angelo Warner added 16.
• Casey Kasperbauer paced the Coyotes with 15 points off the bench. Trevor Gruis added 14 while Adam Thoseby and Brandon Bos each scored 11.

Des Moines police officer facing federal charges

• DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A former Des Moines police officer was arrested Thursday on charges he used excessive force during an arrest in February.
• Colin Boone was indicted Tuesday. Court records show the formal charge is deprivation of rights under color of law, which is a violation of the constitutional right citizens have against unreasonable force by police.
• Boone was arrested Thursday morning in South Dakota. An arraignment was set for Jan. 3 in Council Bluffs. He did not yet have an attorney assigned to his case.
• A grand jury indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Des Moines alleges Boone kicked a man causing an injury on Feb. 19. The charge carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
• Boone was fired May 2 for inappropriate use of force, said Des Moines police spokesman Jason Halifax. Boone had worked for the department since June 2000.
• Halifax said Boone responded to a call on Feb. 19 when a car had crashed into a concrete wall in Des Moines.
• The driver, Orville Hill, initially refused to leave his car and was removed by officers. Reports said he resisted and kicked another officer several times. A police department review found that Boone kicked Hill in the head.
• The Des Moines Register reported in May that Boone was one six officers
