• The Colonels (3-5) came back from a five-point deficit early in the first period to lead by two at the break. A back-and-forth second half broke for the Colonels with a Carpenter 3-pointer with 3:50 left to play. A Thomas dunk, a layup by Sean McBeath, and another 3-pointer by Carpenter followed to put Nicholls State up by a seven-point margin in the final seconds.
• Marcellus Barksdale scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Jaguars (4-9).

South Dakota State beats Wayne (Neb.) 75-56

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- Jordan Dykstra scored 18 points and Cody Larson and Brayden Carlson 16 apiece as South Dakota State defeated Wayne State (Neb.) 75-56 on Wednesday night.
• The Jackrabbits (6-7) made a season-high 60 percent of their shots with a 27-of-45 performance, scoring 40 points in the paint to just 16 for the Division II Wildcats. The Jackrabbits never trailed, leading 49-33 at the half and taking their biggest lead of 24 points with 3:29 left in the game.
• South Dakota State outscored the Wildcats 15-3 at the line, getting 23 attempts to seven for Wayne State.
• The Wildcats (4-6) were led by Ty Bauschek's 22 points.
• It was the final home game of the calendar year for the Jackrabbits, who now begin a five-game road string that includes their Summit League opener at IUPUI on Jan. 9.

Report: SD leads nation in juvenile lockup rate

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota locked up juvenile offenders at the nation's highest rate two years ago but is taking steps that should reduce the number of young people being incarcerated, according to a report issued Wednesday by two organizations involved in juvenile justice reform.
• The study by the National Juvenile Justice Network and the Texas Public Policy Foundation's Center for Effective Justice said South Dakota in 2011 confined 489 juveniles for every 100,000 youth in the state, a rate that was 2.6 times the national average of 195.
