Yankton attorney making run for US Senate

• YANKTON, S.D. (AP) -- A Yankton attorney and soldier has announced a run for the U.S. Senate in South Dakota.
• Thirty-seven-year-old Jason Ravnsborg (ROWNS'-burg) says he'll seek the Republican nomination for the Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Tim Johnson. Johnson isn't seeking re-election.
• Ravnsborg is a major in the U.S. Army Reserves and has been deployed three times -- to Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan. He helped run a NATO military base in Afghanistan. He says his military service has given him a good foreign affairs background.
• Ravnsborg says he wants to cut the federal budget deficit and oppose President Barack Obama's health care law.
• Others seeking the GOP nomination are former Gov. Mike Rounds, state Sen. Larry Rhoden of Union Center, state Rep. Stace Nelson of Fulton and Sioux Falls physician Annette Bosworth.

SD lawmakers start process to hire staff director

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A legislative panel is beginning the process of hiring a new director for the South Dakota Legislature's staff.
• Jim Fry, former director of the Legislative Research Council, resigned in September after a report prepared by an outside organization criticized his office. He said he was preparing to retire anyway, and resigned because he disagreed with some legislative leaders' plans to have LRC staff work more directly with political parties.
• The Legislature's Executive Board on Monday planned to discuss the possibility of hiring a firm to conduct a nationwide search for a new director of the Legislative Research Council.
• Sen. Ryan Maher of Isabel, chairman of the Executive Board, says he hopes a new director can be hired by the end of March.
