SD man gets 50 years in prison for raping toddler

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Rapid City man who raped a 3-year-old girl and took photos of the abuse has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
• Thirty-nine-year-old Alexander Palomarez pleaded guilty in October to first-degree rape. Authorities say Palomarez had 23 photos of the abuse on his cellphone.
• Judge Janine Kern at Monday's sentencing called the photos "repulsive, sickening and outrageous."
• Palomarez also had faced child pornography charges but prosecutors dropped them in exchange for his guilty plea to rape.
• Palomarez could have been sentenced to life in prison. He must serve at least half of his 50-year term before being eligible for parole.

SD attorney general's annual pie day is Saturday

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is hosting the 16th annual Pie Day in the state Capitol in Pierre on Saturday.
• The annual event includes free pie, cookies, coffee and ice cream. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST and features free entertainment.
• Pie Day began when Mark Barnett was attorney general.
• Barnett, now a circuit judge, told workers at a polling place that state law prevented them from offering snacks or goodies to voters. Instead, he invited them to Pierre to have pie, and the event has been held each year since.

Cody Ohl in 1st place in tie-down roping

• LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Cody Ohl took over first place in the tie-down roping world standings by claiming his third consecutive round win in a time of 7.3 seconds during round five on Monday at the National Finals Rodeo.
• Six-time world champion Ohl, of Hico, Texas, leads the world standings with $148,879. He also leads his event with $53,936 in NFR earnings. This was Ohl's event-best 47th career win.
