S. Dakotans brave cold for deals, even on Thurs.

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Good deals and long lines greeted South Dakotans who ventured out for Black Friday and even a day earlier on Thanksgiving.
• Kmart opened early Thursday morning and other stores in Sioux Falls followed, including the Empire Mall, which opened the doors at 8 p.m. Some store workers let a few customers in at a time to reduce overcrowding.
• In Aberdeen, University of North Dakota graduate student Kelli Renner tried to study for an anatomy final as she and others stood outside Target Thursday night.
• The first person in line was Chanell Brown, who planned to buy a 50-inch TV, priced at $229. She arrived at 11:30 a.m. Thursday wearing two coats but said she was still cold.

Dog bite stops mail in Rapid City neighborhood

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Postal Service has suspended mail delivery to a Rapid City neighborhood because a carrier was bitten by a dog.
• The last piece of mail residents on the 100 block of Montana Street got was a Nov. 8 letter saying they can pick up their mail at the post office.
• A spokesman says it is an inconvenience for the 16 homes, but the agency has to keep its employees safe.
• Lucie Ronfeldt says her husband had a stroke, so she has to go to the post office now to get the mail. She says it's not fair the whole neighborhood is punished because of one dog.
• An animal control officer says the attack is under investigation and the agency will determine whether the dog is dangerous.

Attorney general urges safe holiday shopping

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Attorney General Marty Jackley's encouraging consumers to shop with care as the holiday season kicks off.
• Jackley suggests that shoppers check refund and return policies for restrictions and exceptions, double check delivery dates, review warranties, compare prices and check shipping and handling fees. Those buying gift cards should also check for fees and expiration dates.
