Heartland Awards Energy Efficiency Grant to Groton
• The city of Groton recently received an energy efficiency grant from Heartland Consumers Power District to assist with the installation of more efficient street lighting.
• The city is replacing 16, 150 watt high pressure sodium street lights with 54 watt LED lights. Electric energy savings from the project are estimated at 10,233 kilowatt hours or $767 per year. The project should pay for itself through savings in approximately 4.4 years. The city will provide all labor to install the new fixtures.
•  "The new lights will provide savings to the city during peak times," said Paul Kosel, Groton's technology specialist. "In addition, the LEDs provide a whiter and brighter light than the current high pressure sodium fixtures."
• In addition to new street lights, the city of Groton recently completed their electric meter change-out program which replaced all meters with remote read meters. They also received an energy efficiency grant from Heartland earlier this year for upgrading lighting at the city shop.
• Heartland is a non-profit, public power utility providing wholesale power as well as energy services and community development programs to the city of Groton as well as other communities and state agencies in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. The city of Groton then retails the power to its residents, businesses and industries. As part of their energy efficiency program, Power Forward, Heartland awards grants to its wholesale customers for specific projects that will improve energy efficiencies within the city.
