• Land for the Northern Beef plant was first secured in 2006, but the company wasn't able to slaughter its first animal until late in 2012 and struggled to reach anywhere near its production target of 1,500 head per day. With $138.8 million in liabilities and just $79.3 million in assets, according to court documents, the plant laid off most of its employees and halted production.

South Dakota gets $225K of Google's $17M payout

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Google Inc. will pay the state of South Dakota nearly $225,000 as part of a $17 million payout to 37 states and the District of Columbia.
• It's part of a settlement to make amends for the Internet search provider's snooping on millions of people using Safari Web browsers in 2011 and 2012.
• The agreement stems from a technological loophole that enabled Google's DoubleClick advertising network to shadow unwitting Safari users, even though the browser's maker, Apple Inc., prohibited the tracking without obtaining a person's permission.
• By following what Safari users were doing online, DoubleClick could gain more insights about what types of ads were most likely to appeal to different Safari users.

Iowa man pleads not guilty in Sioux City slaying

• SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A Sioux City man has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the killing of a man whose body was found in South Dakota.
• Martin Castellanos entered a written plea Monday in Woodbury County District Court. No trial date has been set.
• The 20-year-old Castellanos is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Adrian Rojas-Hernandez in October in Sioux City.
• Hernandez's partially burned body was found later in a ditch alongside a gravel road across the state border in South Dakota. A manhunt followed and Castellanos was arrested a few days later.
• Another man, 22-year-old Ricardo Vital, of Sioux City, has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of accessory after the fact. Investigators say he drove a car used to move Hernandez's body, and helped clean up evidence.
