Pierre teacher honored with national award

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A Pierre teacher has been honored as an outstanding educator.
• Riggs High School English teacher Shana Davis received the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award at a ceremony Monday that involved Gov. Dennis Daugaard and state Education Secretary Melody Schopp.
• Davis is the only South Dakota teacher and one of only 40 nationwide to receive the award this year. She'll get $25,000 that she says she likely will put toward her effort to get a master's degree.

No bond reduction for South Dakota chase suspect

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A judge is refusing to reduce bond for a Rapid City man shot by a state Highway Patrol trooper after a chase on Interstate 90.
• Twenty-seven-year-old William Chandler sought to have his $250,000 bond reduced to about $5,000. Judge Janine Kern on Monday declined, citing public safety concerns.
• Authorities allege that Chandler led officers on a chase after a Highway Patrol trooper tried to pull him over for speeding on Sept. 30. They say he eventually was caught and arrested but managed to escape his handcuffs and steal a squad car.
• A state investigation concluded that Trooper Mike Bock was justified in shooting and wounding Chandler because Chandler threatened to back the squad car into him.
• Chandler has pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from aggravated assault to escape.

SD Guard soldiers back in US from Afghanistan

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Eighteen South Dakota National Guard soldiers who served nine months in Afghanistan are back on U.S. soil.
• The members of the 129th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment arrived at Fort Dix, N.J., on Monday. The Rapid City-based unit will go through the demobilization process there before returning to South Dakota.
• The unit's mission overseas involved public affairs, media coverage and media
