• The 10th-ranked Penguins gained 243 yards on the ground and quarterback Kurt Hess completed 22 of 26 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score.
• "They just had too many weapons, and I think it all starts with (Hess)," South Dakota coach Joe Glenn said. "That guy is phenomenal. He was the difference in the game."
• Hess' counterpart, South Dakota quarterback Kevin Earl, was 16-for-31 for 219 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score. The Coyotes came into the game ranked second nationally in pass defense (125 yards) and fifth in total defense (297).
• Hess' 40-yard TD to Jody Webb gave Youngstown State (8-1, 5-0) an early 7-3 lead. He tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Michael Wheary while coming back from a 27-19 deficit in the third quarter.
• "Youngstown's offense was really consistent. Their quarterback was smart. He knew where his matchups were," USD linebacker Tyler Starr said.
• The Coyotes scored 10 straight points to take their largest lead 27-19 late in the third quarter. Miles Bergner kicked a 40-yard field goal with 20 seconds left in the first half and Kevin Earl threw an 11-yard TD pass to Josh Vander Maten.
• Hess's 3-yard scoring pass to Wheary rallied the Penguins, and minutes later, Webb put the Penguins on top 31-27 with a 42-yard run.
• The Coyotes marched 66 yards in seven plays to take the lead with less than two minutes to play.
• Again Hess brought Youngstown State back. He completed three of four passes on the game-winning drive, which included just one third-down play. The drive included a personal foul on South Dakota that took the ball down to the USD 28.

Youngstown St. beats USD in final seconds 38-34

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- Martin Ruiz scored with 14 seconds remaining to answer a late South Dakota touchdown as Youngstown State sealed a wild 38-34 win Saturday.
• Jordan Roberts ran in from 11 yards to give South Dakota a 34-31 lead with two minutes left to play. The Penguins (8-1, 5-0 Missouri Valley Conference) took off down the field with a 10-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by Ruiz's three-yard rush into the end zone.
• Kurt Hess finished with 283 yards passing for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Penguins ended with 517 offensive yards. Youngstown State turned the
