SD makes 4 DUI, 2 drug arrests in joint operation

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers made four drunken-driving arrest and two drug arrests during a joint enforcement operation with the Nebraska State Patrol on U.S. Highway 81 on both sides of the state border.
• South Dakota troopers also issued 14 citations for speeding and 12 citations for seatbelt violations.
• The Oct. 25 operation was a day-long event for both states' patrols. It was aimed at encouraging safe driving by focusing on criminal activity, speeding, seatbelt use and drinking and driving.
• The Nebraska State Patrol worked the highway on its side of the border.

Free pits for free disposal of livestock closing

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Free sites where ranchers could dispose of livestock carcasses from the early October blizzard will likely close in the next few days.
• Pennington County Emergency Management says it plans to close the Livestock Loss Drop Points by Wednesday, more than three weeks after they opened.
• The two locations still open are the Owanka and Quinn drop points.

Ag dept accepting applications for hay bales

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for approximately 580 donated 2012 CRP mid-term management hay bales.
• The USDA's Farm Service Agency is allowing producers with 2012 CRP mid-term management hay to donate the baled residue to the department rather than destroy it.
• Producers in counties affected by the autumn blizzard are eligible for the donated hay. Submitting an application does not guarantee distribution.
• Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch says the department appreciates the South Dakota FSA office helping to send the bales to producers in need.
• Baled residue from participating producers will be available in limited quantities.
