SD Wing of Civil Air Patrol conducts exercise

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is conducting a statewide search-and-rescue training exercise.
• Personnel, vehicles and aircraft are gathering Saturday at their units' headquarters. The exercise is designed to train mission support staff in organizing, planning and controlling an emergency mission, train aircrews in aerial observation techniques, and train ground search teams.
• Officials say an emphasis will be placed on communications and the documentation of mission activities.
• The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol has squadrons in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Rapid City, Pierre, Custer and Spearfish, with about 300 officers and cadets and six light aircraft. It helps government agencies with search and rescue, homeland security, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and counter-drug missions.

Menno hosting Oktoberfest with food, music

• MENNO, S.D. (AP) -- The town of Menno is holding its 30th annual Oktoberfest on Saturday.
• The Yankton Press & Dakotan reports (http://bit.ly/16vmdag ) that the ethnic celebration at the Menno School Auditorium features food, music and dancing.
• The event is put on by the Sodak Stamm Germans from Russia Heritage Society.
• President Gary Jerke says the festival started with just a small gathering and some homemade foods. The celebration now attracts nearly 500 patrons each year.
• The meal begins at 6 p.m. with live music from the Bumble Bees beginning about 8:30 p.m.
• The menu includes German sausage, liverwurst, baked apples, German potato salad, sauerkraut, cheese and crackers, buns, pickled watermelon and a salad bar.
