• The storm dumped up to 4 feet of snow on the Black Hills region. State Veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven has estimated cattle losses at between 15,000 and 30,000 animals.
• South Dakota's Department of Public Safety on Wednesday said a contractor working to remove livestock carcasses from state rights of way was wrapping up the work.
• The state contracted with Dakota Rendering Inc. of Freeman to remove the carcasses. Several of the 15 storm-impacted counties also have been working to remove carcasses from their roadway areas, and individual ranches are dealing with the task of handling the carcasses found on private property.
• Scuse said the EQIP program can help. He also encouraged ranchers to submit forms to the Farm Service Agency to document their losses with the hope that Congress will quickly pass a farm bill to reauthorize livestock disaster assistance.

Rapid City police investigating bar alley death

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in an alley behind a bar.
• Authorities say officers were called to the Brass Rail about 9 p.m. Tuesday for an unwanted person causing a disturbance and refusing the leave. Officers found the unwanted male in the restroom and arrested the 19-year-old for resisting arrest and unlawfully drinking alcohol.
• The responding officers also found an unresponsive 44-year-old man in the alley. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, and an autopsy is pending. Authorities did not immediately identify him.
• Police say they don't know if there is any connection between the man found in the alley and the man who was arrested.

State rights of way cattle carcass removal ending

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota officials say a contractor working to remove livestock carcasses from state rights of way in the wake of a devastating early October blizzard in western South Dakota is wrapping up the work.
