Timber Lake educator is SD's Teacher of the Year
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Timber Lake High School math and science teacher LuAnn Lindskov has been named South Dakota's Teacher of the Year.
• A panel of educators from across the state selected Lindskov from among five regional finalists. The announcement was made during a Thursday evening banquet in Oacoma.
• Lindskov, of Isabel, is a member of Black Hills State University's QuarkNet, a group of South Dakota science teachers who study subatomic physics and connect their students with physicists and students from around the world to collect and share cosmic radiation data. In 2011 she attended a conference about advanced particle physics research at the FermiLab National Laboratory near Chicago.
• "She's connected and therefore keeps her students connected to the community, region, state and country," state Education Secretary Melody Schopp said in a statement.
• Lindskov wins $9,000 in cash and a $7,000 technology package to use in her classroom. She also is now a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award, which will be announced during a White House ceremony next April.
• Other finalists for the state award were: Mindy Foltz of Rosholt, Donna DeKraai of Brookings, Sonya Fossum of Mitchell and Tammy Jo Schlechter of Custer.

Federal workers back on the job throughout SD
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Federal workers returned to work across South Dakota after the 16-day partial government shutdown came to an end.
• U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Park Ranger Mike Adams was one worker who was glad to see Congress approve the bipartisan measure ending the shutdown late Wednesday.
• Adams was the lone worker during the shutdown at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives at Spearfish.
