Noem opposes, Thune, Johnson favor shutdown bill

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's two U.S. senators voted in favor of ending the 16-day partial shutdown of the federal government, but the state's lone representative opposed the measure.
• Republican Rep. Kristi Noem says reopening the government and averting the possibility of a national default are good things. But she says she couldn't support the bill because it doesn't address continued deficit spending.
• Republic Sen. John Thune says the measure isn't perfect but it's necessary. He also says it will force Congress to have a broad debate about what he calls "dangerous levels of spending and debt."
• Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson says a key piece of the agreement is "jump-starting a constructive budget process."

SD involved in EPA case accepted by Supreme Court

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The state of South Dakota is a plaintiff in a challenge of environmental regulations that will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.
• The high court has accepted six cases that challenge the Environmental Protection Agency's regulation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions. The Supreme Court will decide whether the EPA's authority to regulate automobile emissions of greenhouse gases as air pollutants also applies to power plants and factories.
• One of the cases accepted by the high court was filed by South Dakota, Texas, North Dakota and eight other states that argue the EPA's regulation goes beyond the agency's legal authority.
• South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the state estimates the new regulations may require 1,000 South Dakota facilities to get air permits for the first time.
