Distance education continues to grow in SD

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Board of Regents says nearly 22,000 students enrolled in a distance education course at South Dakota public universities last year.
• That's an 8.5 percent growth in unduplicated students enrolled in distance courses. It's slightly lower than last year's 13 percent increase.
• Regents executive director and chief executive Jack Warner, says virtually all major performance indicators climbed by large margins. He says total enrollment, average enrollment, total credit hours and average credit hours in distance education have all increased each year since 2008-09.
• Courses are primarily offered through the Internet and the Digital Dakota. They're also offered at off-campus delivery sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, Watertown, Huron, and Mitchell.

Watertown veteran honored for Vietnam vet help
JILL CALLISON, Argus Leader
• An AP Member Exchange Feature by the Argus Leader

• On the surface, David Jerpseth says, he and Don Reconnu have nothing in common, particularly when it comes to politics and lifestyle.
• What they do share, however, surmounts all of that. The two Watertown men both served in Vietnam and, almost 50 years later, remain physically and emotionally scarred from the experience.
• Jerpseth and Reconnu came together 2 1/2 years ago to establish a chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America for northeast South Dakota and western Minnesota. Chapter 1054 since has grown to 325 members with another 25 taking associate membership.
• Chapter members have participated in parades and established an honor guard to pay final respects at veterans' funerals. They've offered cash or grocery store gift cards to needy veterans and their families, contacting area veteran service offices to learn what is needed.
• The accomplishments are many, Jerpseth says, and VVA Chapter 1054 owes much of that to Reconnu.
