Mount Rushmore site of government shutdown protest

• KEYSTONE, S.D. (AP) -- Mount Rushmore National Memorial is reopening, but some people aren't happy about the lack of federal support for the memorial in western South Dakota's Black Hills.
• National parks have been closed because of the partial government shutdown. South Dakota and several corporate donors worked out a deal with the National Park Service to reopen Mount Rushmore beginning Monday.
• Demonstrators took to the streets of Keystone on Sunday to show their disapproval of the lack of federal assistance. They traveled from the town to Mount Rushmore in cars and on horseback.
• Organizer Jeff Johnson says people are happy the monument is reopening but not very pleased about how that came about.

More snow on the way for western SD's Black Hills

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- More snow is on the way for parts of the Black Hills in western South Dakota, as crews continue working to restore power to people who lost electricity during a blizzard earlier this month.
• The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the central and northern Black Hills Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. Forecasters say as much as a foot of snow is possible in some areas.
• The storm earlier this month dumped up to 4 feet of snow in some areas, cutting power to about 30,000 people in the region. Black Hills Power says it still has about 425 customers out, and West River Electric Association says it has about 450 customers still out.

SD state board wants input on racist names

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names plans to discuss a couple of racist names at its next board meeting in Sioux Falls.
• The group says the purpose of the meeting is to take public input on whether the word "Negro" is offensive in names of geographic features. The current legislation directs the board to rename any features with the word in the name.
