The Lake Region Marching Band Festival comes to Groton today

•   Hundreds of high school musicians and spectators along with the Northern State University Marching Wolves will be in the town of Groton on Friday Oct. 11th for the Lake Region Marching Band Festival. The parade of bands will march from South to North on Groton's Main Street from Railroad Avenue up to 9th Avenue, starting at 10:00 AM followed by a performance by the Northern State University Marching Wolves at the football field. The appearance of the NSU Marching Wolves is sponsored by the Groton Dairy Queen and the Groton Chamber of Commerce.
•  This festival has been held in Waubay for the past 11 years, and moved to Groton this year.  It has traditionally been held on the second Friday in October. The bands will be spaced about 4-5 minutes apart so the groups can be judged. Bands are divided into three classes: High School Bands, Middle School Bands, and Combined Bands.  Each band will receive a trophy for taking part, and the top two bands of each class will receive "Band of Distinction" and "Band of Merit" awards.  A "People's Choice" award will also be awarded by a separate, secret judging panel placed throughout the parade route.  The bands will be judged by Dr. Boyd Perkins, Mrs. Jessica Perkins, and Dr. Terry Beckler, all faculty of the Music Department at Northern State University.
•  The festival has become a premier marching event in Northeast South Dakota. People come from all over the area to watch, listen and cheer for the bands on the parade route.  The event can be heard on the radio on KBWS- FM 102.9 Pheasant Country and KMSD- AM 1510/98.3FM Oldies.  It can also be heard online at www.bigstoneradio.com
•  The public is invited to line Main Street in Groton from Railroad Avenue to 9th Avenue to enjoy this parade of marching bands.  Northern State University's performance and awards are also open to the public at the Groton Area High School football field.
