Western SD counties hit by storm seek federal help

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Counties in western South Dakota impacted by last weekend's snowstorm are seeking help from the federal government.
• Commissioners in the counties of Pennington, Meade, Lawrence and Butte all have declared disasters. That's the first step toward getting federal aid. Requests must first go through the governor.
• Pennington County Commission Chairman Lyndell Petersen says he's confident the region will get federal help because of the size of the storm
• It dumped up to 4 feet of snow in western South Dakota's Black Hills, cutting power to about 30,000 people, killing tens of thousands of cattle, damaging buildings, bringing travel to a standstill and shutting down schools.
• Schools in Rapid City were reopening on Wednesday.

SD Civil Air Patrol checks dead cattle on highways

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota wing of the Civil Air Patrol has been flying over the western part of the state to locate livestock killed by the weekend blizzard.
• The CAP was asked by the state Department of Public Safety to identify and photograph areas where dead livestock are obstructing state highways or are in road ditches. It was using three airplanes to conduct the survey.
• Some ranchers in western South Dakota have reported as much as 50 percent or more of their cattle died after a day of rain was followed by two days of snow with winds up to 60 mph. An official of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association says 5 percent or more of the cattle in western South Dakota may have been killed in the last weekend's storm.

South Dakota 4-H looks to expand robotics clubs

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota 4-H is looking to expand its robotics programs.
• SDSU Extension 4-H STEM field specialist Christine Wood says 4-H will be holding training sessions over the next few months for volunteers, troop leaders, educators and parents interested in leading a club.
