Historic church given new life

• New life is being breathed into the Trinity Episcopal Church in Groton. This past Sunday, the first worship service was held since the late 1960's. Paul Kosel, minister of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pierpont, led the service with Marie Sternhagen playing the pump organ.
• The church is owned by the Brown County Historical Society and the society has toyed with

the idea of having the church moved to Aberdeen since it was not being used or open to the public in Groton. The Groton City Council had recently voted to not take over the church because of the cost of repairs.
• Kosel decided to start worship services at the church and they will be held at 5 p.m. on Sundays. It is about that time of the day when the sun shines through the majestic stained glass windows facing west and creates an awesome view. The worship service is non-denominational, non-traditional and no membership is required. A collection is taken at the come-as-you-are worship service with the funds given to the Brown County Historical Society where they will be earmarked for church repairs and maintenance.  A collection of $75 was taken at the first service. Contributions are tax-deductible to the society. Work will need to be done to the southeast foundation of the church, some work will need to be done to the stain glass windows, a heating and cooling system may need to be explored and eventually, the roof will need to be reshingled. The society has also put a lot of work into the church with the wall paper on the inside being torn off and then being repainted.
• The church is on the National Register of Historic Places, being built in 1884 and is Groton's oldest community landmark. But don't go running to your computer to go to the National Register - it is run by the Department of the Interior and the website is down during the government shut-down.
