USD losing its ROTC military training program

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota is one of 13 schools nationally losing its ROTC program, the U.S. Army Cadet Command told the Vermillion university this week.
• Lt. Col. Ross Nelson, professor of military science at USD, told the Press & Dakotan (http://bit.ly/1775Hx7 ) the programs are being eliminated due to downsizing and "other fiscal developments."
• Reactions in Vermillion are those of "shock and disappointment," he said.
• "I think overall the university just kind of feels like they didn't have a say in what was happening," Nelson said.
• "There (were) no indications that the closings were made because of lack of support," he said. "The school has been great to the program. The program has continued to produce quality lieutenants for the Army. It's just more of a representation across the U.S. of what areas had overrepresentation for ROTC programs based on population density."
• ROTC offers scholarships that can cover up to the full cost of tuition, in exchange for military service.
• USD's program is scheduled to continue through the end of the 2015 academic year.
• Cadets in the program who graduate by then will get their commissions from USD. Cadets who graduate after May 2015 will be given the option to transfer to other universities that have ROTC programs.
• South Dakota State and the School of Mines and Technology still offer ROTC, as do universities in surrounding states, though North Dakota State University's program is also being eliminated.
• "Their benefits of scholarship will follow them to the university that they want to go to," Nelson said. "If they lose credits in the transfer, if they have to go out of state
