SDSU plans stadium announcement at Saturday's game
• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State University will announce plans for a new football stadium at Saturday's homecoming game in Brookings, the school announced Thursday.
• A news conference is scheduled for noon and a public announcement will happen during halftime of the game against Southern Illinois, according to a news release from Jason Hove, the school's sports information director.
• SDSU earlier this month presented a proposed timeline of the project and updated architectural diagrams to the state Board of Regents. Officials expect to submit a funding plan to the Regents in early December. If the board gives its blessing, the project would go to state lawmakers to consider early next year. If approved, it would be ready for the 2016 season.
• SDSU President David Chicoine said an 18,500-seat venue could cost up to $65 million, with much of it financed through bonds.
• The new stadium would replace Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, which opened in 1962 and set a new attendance record last Saturday of 16,498 when SDSU hosted North Dakota State.
• It seats only about 10,000 fans and lacks many modern amenities. The new stadium would have nearly twice as many seats, more concessions, restrooms and luxury offerings, such as suites and a club lounge, designed to enhance the fan experience and increase revenue.
• SDSU recently broke ground for the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex, a $32 million, privately funded indoor facility with an artificial turf football field and a 300- (Continued on page 32)
