SD State Fair attendance good despite heat wave

• HURON, S.D. (AP) -- Officials say attendance was better than expected at this year's South Dakota State Fair.
• Despite the heat wave that hit during the annual fair's first three days, total attendance this year was the third highest ever recorded.
• Total gate attendance this year was 183,005, down only 5 percent from last year's record.
• State Fair Manager Jerome Hertel says many people visited the fair in Huron after temperatures cooled for the final two days. He says the number of exhibitors, vendors and campers exceeded last year's numbers.
• The state Revenue Department says the five-day fair raised more than $148,000 in total tax revenue, up from about $143,500 last year.

Some Black Hills tourist sites still visible

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The federal government shutdown has closed access to some popular Black Hills area tourist spots, but the regional tourism association says some are still visible.
• Direct access is closed to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and Devils Tower National Monument.
• But the Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association says the full faces of Mount Rushmore can be seen from Highway 16A and George Washington is visible from the vehicle pull-off area. And the Rushmore Borglum Historical Center in Keystone is also open.
• The Badlands can be observed from either park entrance point on Highway 240.
• And close views of Devils Tower can be seen from the trading post near the entrance.

SD Ag Department hosting pine beetle workshop

• LEAD, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Agriculture is hosting a free workshop in Lead (LEED) on treatment of mountain pine beetles in the Black Hills.
