• Diaz, who is a Mexican national, moved with her family to Indiana at age 11. She dropped out of school, gave birth to Salgado's child and ran away with him to South Dakota, according to court records.
• Sherri Sundem Wald, a deputy attorney general, told the state Supreme Court that the officers who questioned Diaz initially didn't know if she was a runaway, a victim, a witness or a suspect. She said the officers were being cautious, even calling in a Spanish-speaking detective from Sioux Falls to make sure Diaz understood.
