phases of the game. We need to pick up our discipline," Bohl said. "We can certainly play better than we did."
• The team left any euphoria from last weekend's ESPN presence in Fargo, so that wasn't an issue, Bohl said.
• NDSU linebacker Grant Olson recorded two sacks for 14 yards. Stopping Zenner for no gain on the first play of the game set the tone, he said.
• "We knew that if we were going to win, we needed to be the more physical team," Olson said.
• A Coughlin-Alumni Stadium record crowd of 16,498 watched.
• The rivalry is known as the Dakota Marker game. North Dakota State leads the series 6-4. The Dakota Marker is a traveling trophy started in 2004 that mimics the quartzite monuments that used to mark the border between the two states. The initials "N.D." and "S.D." are chiseled on opposite sides, and "190 M" is inscribed in one face, representing the distance between Brookings and the Bison's home of Fargo.
• That proximity brings a lot of rivalries between friends like Jaydon Gorter and Laura Rudie, both 19, who grew up in nearby Pipestone, Minn. He goes to SDSU and she's a student at NDSU. They've been trash-talking all week about the game.
• "He talked me into sitting on this side," Rudie said as they took their seats on the Jackrabbits side.

Western Illinois defeats South Dakota, 24-10

• MACOMB, Ill. (AP) -- Trenton Norvell led a balanced offensive attack as Western Illinois (3-2, 1-0 MVC) finished with a 24-10 victory over South Dakota in a Missouri Valley Conference game on Saturday.
• Norvell was 11 of 23 for 102 yards and one touchdown. J.C. Baker rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries and Nikko Watson carried 22 times for 96 yards and one touchdown. Kevin Kintzel recovered a bad snap on a South Dakota punt in the second quarter and ran 11 yards for a touchdown, putting Western Illinois ahead 10-3 by halftime.
• The Coyotes (1-3, 0-1) compiled only 242 total yards and gave up two fumbles. QB Josh Vander Maten was replaced in the final quarter by Kevin Earl, who put together a successful 8-play drive for the lone Coyote touchdown.
• The Leathernecks answered on their next possession with a touchdown pass from Norvell to Joey Borsellino to seal the win.
