Today in Weather History

1982: An early snowfall in the Black Hills resulted in the breakage of tree branches and caused power outages in parts of Lead and Nevada Gulch.

1896: In 1896 Cedar Key, FL was a bustling seaport. A major hurricane's ten foot storm surge nearly destroyed the community.

1927: An F3 tornado hit St. Louis and more than 200 city blocks were torn apart. 79 people were killed and 550 were injured.

1938: In Charleston, SC, five tornadoes touched down killing 32 people and doing $2 million in damages.

1996: A large severe weather outbreak, including three tornadoes, struck New South Wales, Australia. Winds to 100mph and golf ball sized hail, in addition to the tornadoes, caused $340 million in losses.
