• "This is a pretty elaborate setup," Clemens said. "First, to get their hands on the checks, then to duplicate them, and then find the transients. . I don't think we've ever seen anything this complex before."
• Some of the transients dressed up as construction workers when they went to the banks, he said.
• The men, who are each charged with nine counts of possession of a forged instrument, were identified as: Xavier Cornelius Shields, 21, and Demarcus Q. Stevens, 25, of Decatur, Ga.; and Ryan Vincent Hill, 25, and Dwight Dominic Daniels, 28, of Atlanta.
• They were arrested this week during a traffic stop and at a hotel.
• One key tip came in August from a housekeeper at another hotel who found an envelope filled with blank checks and called police.
• Because the checks were likely stolen from mailboxes, the federal government might intervene, so police have been working with the postal inspector, Clemens said.

School of Mines to resume AD search in spring

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology plans to resume its search for a new athletic director next spring when those jobs are typically filled.
• The Rapid City university has not been able to find a replacement for Dick Kaiser since he resigned in July.
• Tiffany McCampbell and Michael Gunn will serve as co-interim athletic directors. McCampbell is head volleyball coach and senior women's administrator/assistant athletic director. Gunn is associate provost for academic affairs and enrollment management.
• Kaiser left for Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla., where he's the head athletic grounds supervisor and director of the intercollegiate golf program. His is an associate athletics director there.
• Kaiser was the driving force behind the Hardrockers' four-year journey from NAIA to NCAA Division II status.

SD had 2nd highest flu shot rate last season

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- New data from the federal government show that South Dakota had the second-highest vaccination rate nationally last season.
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that more than half of the
