• Sioux Falls police said the men stole 48 legitimate checks from company mailboxes, copied them and scrubbed the "pay to the order of" section. The checks were written on the accounts of Carlson Construction, the Avera Wellness Center and others, police said.
• Then the men offered $150 to transients who had photo IDs who put their names on the checks and cashed them at local banks, leaving the rest of the cash for the scam artists. Each check was worth $1,500 to $2,000, said police spokesman Sam Clemens.
