SD PAC treasurer admits campaign violation

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A former state prosecutor has pleaded guilty to a campaign law violation while serving as treasurer of a South Dakota political action committee.
• Attorney General Marty Jackley says 41-year-old Scott Swier, of Avon, pleaded guilty Thursday in Pierre to one count of failing to file or amend a statement of organization for a PAC, a class 2 misdemeanor.
• The charges stemmed from a donation that Swier received while he was treasurer of the South Dakota Telecommunications PAC.
• Swier's fines were suspended on the condition that he returns $6,500 to Free Conferencing Corp. and follows the law in the future.
• He's now in private practice.

Prison inmates walk away from Rapid City job

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Two South Dakota prison inmates are on the loose after leaving their community service job in Rapid City.
• The Department of Corrections says 21-year-old Lucas Odle and 33-year-old Joseph Larson left their work assignment just before 1 p.m. Thursday.
• Odle's serving time for possession of a controlled substance out of Meade County. Larson is in prison for grand theft convictions in Butte and Pennington counties.

Prosecutor lauds program to combat tribal violence

• FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota's top federal prosecutor says a program to reduce violent crime on American Indian reservations is working and his office will continue to dedicate time and money to the project.
• U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon on Thursday released an in-house review to tribal and law enforcement officials that touts a dramatic increase in the number of prosecutions and highlights several major cases in the last year. The report comes two years after the anti-violence initiative was launched and three days after a man was convicted in a double murder on the Spirit Lake Reservation.
• "We're obviously not going to solve the problem in two years," Purdon said in an interview. "That being said, we're pleased with the initial steps we've taken toward safety on reservations."
