Head-on crash south of Mitchell kills at least 2
• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Highway Patrol says at least two people were killed in a head-on collision about six miles south of Mitchell. • It happened after 4 p.m. Wednesday on state Highway 37. • A sheriff's deputy told The Daily Republic (http://bit.ly/16AvTPA ) that a 3-year-old girl was taken to a hospital with injuries. • Shortly after the accident was reported, a pickup was on fire and a charred van was also on the scene. Traffic was being diverted and smoke could be seen from several miles away. • Witnesses say a young man who came upon the accident used a knife to cut a seat belt and remove the girl from one of the burning vehicles. •
Mom of kids killed in fire gets 6 years for drugs
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Sioux Falls woman who used meth hours before her three children were killed in a house fire was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison for drug possession. • Minnehaha County Judge Brad Zell sentenced Rhiannon White to the women's prison in Pierre and said she'll be eligible for parole in 13 months. • The Dec. 22 fire killed 6-year-old Alivia Coon, 12-year-old Savannah Coon and 16-year-old Michael Hensley. • "You're not guilty for causing the death of your kids, but you and your husband will feel great guilt for the rest of your life," Zell told White. • White pleaded guilty in August to possession of a controlled substance, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
