number of full-time equivalent students is up by 313 over the year, the Regents reported Tuesday. Full-time equivalency is based on total credit hours generated by all students.
• "Full-time equivalent students are an important indicator of growth for us," said Jack Warner, the Regents' executive director and CEO. "It tells us that we serve more students who take a heavier course load toward completion of their degree programs. Along with last week's news that we have seen stronger, double-digit growth in the number of students graduating from South Dakota public universities, we certainly consider this a positive trend."
• The Board of Regents last week reported that the number of students graduating from the six public universities with an associate or bachelor's degree has increased by 33 percent since 2005.
• Warner said student success initiatives such as freshmen success seminars, enhanced academic advising, and specialized math and writing centers are "a major focus" at all of the universities. Officials also work closely with high schools to identify and help students who need help before they even arrive on campus, he said.


SD teen cited in hit-and-run that killed 3 horses

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Authorities in Minnehaha County have cited a teenager in a hit-and-run incident that killed three horses.
• The sheriff's office says the horses escaped from a fenced area on Sept. 14 and were struck by a pickup truck. The driver left the scene without reporting the crash.
• The sheriff's office says it received a tip on Monday that led officers to a 17-year-old boy from Crooks. Capt. James Hoekman says the boy hit the horses while driving to work and didn't report it because he did not have insurance on the vehicle.
• He was cited for not reporting the accident and for not having insurance. Authorities did not identify him.

Griz safety suspended for 1 game after arrest

• MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- University of Montana free safety Matt Hermanson has been suspended for the Northern Arizona game on Saturday after being arrested for criminal mischief.
• Hermanson, 21, of Sioux Falls, S.D., pleaded not guilty in Justice Court Monday to charges that he damaged road signs near Fort Missoula. He remains free on $500 bond.
• Attorney Paul Ryan said Hermanson also pleaded guilty to an earlier, unrelated
