Groton Receives Energy Efficiency Grant

•  GROTON, S.D. - The city of Groton recently received an energy efficiency grant for $1,500 from Heartland Consumers Power District to assist with the installation of more efficient lighting at the city shop.
•  Electric energy savings from the project are estimated at 10,017 kilowatt hours or $798 per year. The project should pay for itself through savings in 2.7 years. The new lighting will reduce electric demand at the city shop by 3.38 kilowatts per year.
•  The shop will see a lighting upgrade from T12 fluorescent fixtures to T8 fluorescent lighting. T8 fixtures are typically about 40% more efficient than T12s with an average lifespan of 20,000 to 30,000 hours. Twenty-five 2-bulb fixtures are being replaced with 15 6-bulb fixtures.
•  "We will have fewer fixtures, yet more bulbs," said Paul Kosel, Groton's technology specialist. "The lighting will be greatly improved while using less electricity."
• In addition to new lighting at the city shop, the city of Groton recently completed their electric meter change-out program which replaced all meters with remote read
