1961: In Webster between 1 and 2 am, a large farm implement was destroyed by a lightning-caused fire. Many implements, three cars, two trucks, as well as merchandise, were lost. Nearby buildings suffered damage from fire. The heavy rain was helpful in reducing the spread of the fire.

1975: Large hail up to the size of 2 inches in diameter damaged many acres of corn, flax, and millet fields during the evening. The area between Volga and Brookings received the most serious damage.

1988: Lightning started fires in Todd county southwest of Mission that burned nearly 14,000 acres of grassland and 4000 acres of timber. The damages were more than 60,000 dollars.

1919: One of the most intense hurricanes to hit the U.S. swept through Key West, FL. Over 700 people died along the storm's track from the Lesser Antilles to Corpus Christi, TX.

1976: Tropical Storm Kathleen hit San Diego, CA causing widespread flooding and producing 72 mph wind gusts. A foot of rain fell in a few places in the mountains from the 9th to the 12th, with rainfall rates up to an inch per hour. Six people were killed.

2003: A Florida couple won $21 million when they bought the winning lottery ticket while shopping for a surge protector after lightning had struck their TV set.
