Spearfish hatchery avoids immediate closure

• SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) -- A fish hatchery in Spearfish is apparently not closing -- at least for now.
• The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had planned to shut down the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery on Oct. 1.
• But according to a post on its website, the historic hatchery will be open at least until Nov. 1.
• The Booth Society is a group spearheading efforts to keep the hatchery open. It received word from the federal government about the change but said it's unclear when more information will be available on when hatcheries would or would not be permanently shut down.

Upcoming march, marathon to honor veterans

• ROCHFORD, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota National Guard's Enlisted Association will honor veterans with a march and marathon in the Black Hills later this month.
• The 10th annual Black Hills Veterans Honor March and Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21.
• Marchers will start on the Mickelson Trail at approximately 8 a.m. MDT at the Rochford Trailhead and finish at the Deadwood Fairgrounds. It can take six to eight hours to complete.
• The 26.2-mile route is open to all military service members and civilians. Participants can compete as individuals or in five-member teams and can complete the course by walking, running or marching.
• A 13.1-mile mini-march is also available.
