• Roberts joined the administration of Gov. Bill Janklow in 1979, working first as an executive policy analyst and then as special assistant to the governor.
• Gov. George S. Mickelson appointed Roberts as commissioner of the state Bureau of Personnel in 1989, and she stayed in that position during the administration of Gov. Walter Dale Miller. When Janklow became governor again, she was his chief of operations from 1995 to 2003. Gov. Mike Rounds then appointed Roberts as labor secretary in 2003.
• She took on an expanded role in Daugaard's administration beginning in 2011, when the agency was renamed the Department of Labor and Regulation and took on additional duties.
• "It's been an honor to serve the people of South Dakota," Roberts said.
• Roberts will retire on Oct. 10. Daugaard said Marcia Hultman, the department's deputy secretary, will serve as interim secretary if necessary until a successor to Roberts is named.
